Scientific Case for a New Cohort Study

The UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) commissioned a team convened by Longview to undertake this scoping study. The aim of this work was to support the case that ESRC, along with other potentially interested parties, was considering making to the "Large Scale (Science) Facilities Fund" for funding to support a new cohort study.

We collected evidence from a large number of experts on longitudinal study throughout the UK and overseas. The draft report was discussed at a consultative conference in St. Catherine’s College Oxford, on 20/21st September 2007. The final report was delivered to ESRC on October 16th 2007.

Support for the new birth cohort study in 2011/12 has now been confirmed and an invitation to tender issued. This is part of a package of support for the development of the birth cohort studies involving a formal structure for coordination across across all of them - here. With supplementation from ESRC and the UK Medical Rsearch Council (MRC), £28 million will be available for the new study. There will be special emphasis in the progamme on the interactions between individual biology and the changing social and physical environment mapped by the birth cohort studies over the last 60 years. Arising from the work in drawing up the invitation to tender for the new study, ESRC commissioned Longview, in December 2008, to undertake a further scoping study to review, evaluate and cost the design options for the new study. The report of this preliminary work was delivered to ESRC in January 2009 and is now available here.
