New Birth Cohort Study

Longview is delighted at the news that a new birth cohort study will be funded – see This is a vital link in the chain of studies which makes the UK a world leader in the depth of such research.  It is particularly gratifying that a commitment of £33.5m has been made at a time of such tough constraints on public expenditure.

Our congratulations go to Professor Carol Dezateux and her team who have put in such a huge amount of preparatory work. This is a major boost to longitudinal and lifecourse studies, and one that will last for many years.

It is also very good news that there will be funding for more support for use of existing cohort studies, through a new cohort study facility, including improved data access and harmonization of measurement and analysis.  Longview has been arguing for some time that more needs to be done to make sure that the best possible use is made of existing assets. It is great news that there will now be added capacity to bring this about.

Longview is delighted to have been able to play a part in this major development through providing the original rationale for such a further cohort study, through the scoping study written by a Longview Expert Group* with the help of a wide range of other specialists.
