New education work to be commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation is commissioning new research for its Education and Poverty programme. They are calling for proposals for two new studies focusing on attitudes and aspirations towards education. A summary of the programme’s research so far, the new projects and the two calls for proposals can be found here. The new work will build on research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies and Bristol University showing that the attitudes, aspirations and behaviour of children and parents play an important part in explaining the educational attainment gap between richer and poorer children. The two new studies will examine:

  • The evidence for causal relationships between the attitudes, aspirations and behaviour identified in this research and children’s attainment
  • Interventions addressing attitudes and aspirations and how effective these are in raising attainment for low-income children.

The new research will be completed by the middle of 2011.
